A Tropical Escape at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve
By Stephen P. Parag, II
Nestled between the sparkling Atlantic Ocean and the lush foothills of El Yunque Rainforest, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, is a captivating destination that offers an irresistible blend of natural beauty, adventure, and luxury. Only 30 minutes from San Juan Airport, this family-friendly paradise is easily accessible with direct flights from Tampa, making it the perfect getaway without the need for a passport. In less than four hours, you can find yourself immersed in a tropical haven at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico.

Spanning an impressive 72 acres, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico boasts 579 elegantly appointed suite rooms. During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing the exclusive new Villas en la Reserva. These luxurious accommodations provide a “Resort within a Resort” experience, featuring spacious balconies, separate bedrooms, kitchenettes, and living areas that open to expansive views of the surrounding paradise.

The resort’s commitment to providing an unparalleled experience is evident in its amenities and activities. From rejuvenating spa treatments at the Rainforest Spa to rounds of golf on two courses, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind. For those seeking to improve or test their swing, the resort offers Puerto Rico’s only Top Golf Swing Suite, a state-of-the-art virtual golf experience.

Food enthusiasts will find plenty to savor at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve. I was particularly impressed with Prime 787, an American-style steakhouse that infuses traditional dishes with a Puerto Rican twist.
Another highlight was Nori, the resort’s Asian fusion restaurant, where specialty cocktails and premium sakes complement an exquisite dining experience.
For a more casual beachside meal, Rincon Criollo, the resort’s onsite food truck, serves up delicious local fare perfect for a midday snack or lunch by the sea. Additionally, the resort has partnered with F.O.K. Brewing to create PRadise Bliss Lager, a craft beer brewed with island fruits, offering guests a taste of Puerto Rico in every sip. I also indulged in locally brewed coffee and a Pan So Bao, a traditional Puerto Rican bread treat filled with sweet butter, which provided a delightful taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage.
Visiting during the holiday season added an extra layer of magic to my stay. I had the chance to participate in a Coquito-making demonstration, learning how to craft this traditional Puerto Rican holiday beverage. The resort’s festive atmosphere, combined with its luxurious setting, made for an unforgettable holiday experience.

No trip to Rio Grande is complete without a visit to El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Spanning 29,000 acres, this lush ecosystem is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. I embarked on a memorable hike through the rainforest, marveling at the breathtaking waterfalls and diverse flora and fauna.

True to the resort’s motto, “Doing nothing means everything,” there are ample opportunities to simply relax and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. Whether lounging on the pristine beaches, enjoying a massage at the Rainforest Spa, or sipping a cocktail by the pool, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico offers a serene escape from the everyday hustle. For those looking to balance relaxation with recreation, the resort’s array of activities ensures there is something for everyone. Families can enjoy quality time together, while couples and solo travelers can find moments of tranquility and adventure alike.
Whether you’re seeking adventure in the rainforest, indulgence in world-class dining, or relaxation on sun-kissed beaches, this destination and accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve promises an unforgettable escape. With its easy accessibility and no passport requirement, reaching paradise has never been simpler. Pack your bags and prepare to discover the enchantment of Rio Grande — a tropical retreat where doing nothing truly means everything. M
