Vinyl Vibes
The Rise of Hi-Fi
Listening Lounges
in Tampa Bay
Vinyl Vibes are flowing into Tampa Bay — a new wave of entertainment is redefining what it means to enjoy a night out. Inspired by Japan’s iconic kissaten and jazz kissa culture, hi-fi listening bars are emerging as some of the region’s most intriguing destinations. Rather than focusing on crowded dance floors and booming club music, these venues celebrate the art of listening.
At the heart of the concept are meticulously curated vinyl collections, premium analog sound systems, handcrafted cocktails and intimate environments designed for conversation and connection. The emphasis is on quality over volume, where guests can appreciate every note while enjoying thoughtfully crafted food and beverages. Whether you’re a serious audiophile or simply seeking a more sophisticated evening experience, Tampa Bay’s growing collection of listening lounges offers something refreshingly different.
IN BETWEEN DAYS
Long before hi-fi listening bars became one of hospitality’s hottest trends, the inspiration for In Between Days began in a tiny jazz kissa tucked away in Tokyo’s Shibuya district.
Owner and founder Zach Ashton spent years traveling to Japan and found himself repeatedly returning to a modest listening café called Mary Jane. “What struck me most was the sound,” recalls Ashton. “It was so immersive that it felt as though the musicians were performing right there in the room with you. People weren’t just listening to music in the background; they were experiencing it together.”
That experience became the foundation for In Between Days, Florida’s first Tokyo-style listening bar. Housed inside a nearly 100-year-old St. Petersburg bungalow, the intimate space feels more like discovering a hidden neighborhood gem than entering a restaurant. Vintage 1970s Klipsch Cornwall speakers anchor the room, while a carefully curated vinyl collection spanning African records, Thai disco, jazz, and underground electronic music creates an ever-changing soundtrack.
“We wanted to create a place where
music wasn’t simply part of the
atmosphere but an essential part
of why people came,” says Ashton.
The culinary program is equally thoughtful. Chef Justin Shwetzer draws inspiration from his Hawaiian upbringing and extensive travels throughout Japan, creating an evolving menu that responds to seasons and ingredients. Signature dishes include a Tokyo-inspired ramen crafted with more than 30 ingredients, hamachi with yuzu kosho, and acclaimed short-rib dumplings.
Adding to its growing acclaim, In Between Days earned a coveted Michelin recommendation in the 2026 Michelin Guide, cementing its place as one of the most exciting culinary and cultural destinations in Tampa Bay.
As one of Florida’s few dedicated craft sake bars, the beverage program is another highlight. Led by certified sake sommeliers under the direction of Beverage Director Noah Sain, the team offers an ever-changing selection of premium sake alongside guest favorites such as the Ube Colada and Smoked Old Fashioned.
Beyond food and music, Ashton hopes In Between Days serves as a gathering place for creativity and connection. “We want people to discover a new record, try a sake they’ve never heard of, or experience a musician up close in an intimate setting,” he says. “Those moments create lasting memories and help foster a sense of belonging.”

EASY TIGER HI-FI LOUNGE
Opened in April 2026 in St. Petersburg’s Edge District, Easy Tiger Hi-Fi Lounge is quickly becoming a destination for music lovers seeking a deeper listening experience. Created by Matt and Victoria Kaye, along with partners Chris Stone and Craig Dragoonis, the concept was designed to foster a creative, sound-focused environment.
“We wanted to create an intimate,
high-fidelity listening lounge that encourages
connection through music,” says Kaye.
The venue’s sound system features Klipsch Heritage Series speakers paired with McIntosh amplification, while Music Director DJ Casper curates a rotating lineup of local and visiting DJs specializing in vinyl-only sets and immersive musical journeys. The design is equally intentional. Developed with Oliver Shaw and Chris Stone of T2THES, Easy Tiger blends Art Deco influences with elements of Brutalism to create a moody, sophisticated atmosphere. Curved architectural details, sleek furnishings, a marble bar and layered lighting contribute to a space that feels refined yet approachable.
“It’s a room designed around sound,” says Kaye. “Every detail contributes to the overall experience.”

ALTER EGO
Located in Tampa’s vibrant Water Street district, Alter Ego offers a more energetic interpretation of the music-focused lounge. Created by Proper House Group and opened in 2024, the venue blends elevated cocktails, curated music programming and contemporary design into one stylish destination.
The monochromatic interior features intimate seating areas alongside communal gathering spaces that encourage mingling and dancing. Cocktails pay homage to music legends with names like Like a Virgin and What’s Your Fantasy, while the menu offers everything from caviar service and Cacio e Pepe fries to larger plates from sister concept Ash.
Music remains the driving force. Beginning nightly at 9 p.m., local and regional DJs create evolving soundtracks that range from emerging club sounds to Latin beats and dance-floor classics. The result is a venue that feels both sophisticated and vibrant, where the music shapes the mood from the first cocktail to the final song.

THE NEXT WAVE…
The hi-fi movement continues to gain momentum with several highly anticipated concepts expected to debut later this year.

PEPPERMINT LOUNGE
Hospitality veteran Ty Rodriguez is bringing a music-first concept to Tampa Heights with the opening of Peppermint Lounge. Inspired by New York City’s legendary 1960s-era venue of the same name, the space will combine vinyl listening, live music, photography and hospitality in a highly curated environment.
“Music shaped a lot of my life,
and it’s shaped this concept,”
says Rodriguez. “Being able to open our doors
during the day and give kids access
to instruments and lessons
is just as important as what happens at night.”
More than a nightlife destination, Peppermint Lounge will also support local arts education through the Recycled Tunes program of the Gasparilla Music Foundation by providing after-school music programming for students impacted by reductions in school arts funding.

TOKYO SWIM CLUB
From the team behind MICHELIN-starred Kōsen, Tokyo Swim Club is set to open atop the historic Casa Gomez building in Ybor City’s Gasworx District. The rooftop destination will blend retro Tokyo-inspired design with vinyl-driven programming, craft cocktails, sushi, yakitori and panoramic city views. The space will be anchored by a central bar that extends the outdoor experience with pool umbrellas, lush greenery and layered lounge seating, creating a vibrant, resort-like atmosphere that feels both relaxed and nostalgic.
“We’re not trying to keep up with culture,”
says Director of Beverage and Sustainability Mike Western.
“We’re here to help shape it.”
As Tampa Bay’s nightlife landscape continues to mature, these listening lounges prove that sometimes the most memorable nights begin by simply slowing down, settling in and listening. M
